New incentives for collaborative Research & Development projects for companies in FVG

The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has published the 2025 Research & Development Call, part of the PR FESR 2021‑2027 program, to support industrial innovation through non-repayable grants for collaborative industrial research and experimental development projects.

The goal is clear: to encourage companies to develop technologies, processes, and solutions that go beyond the current state of the art, driving real innovation and competitive advancement.

Who can be involved?

The call is open to micro, small, medium, and large enterprises operating in sectors relevant to the proposed project, including manufacturing companies (Ateco section C) and service companies, provided they have adequate administrative, operational, and financial capacity.

Eligible projects

Fundable projects must comply with the criteria outlined in the call, including:

– All parties involved in the project must have their headquarters and/or operational units located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region;

– Projects must include activities of both industrial research and experimental development; additionally, they must identify a technical challenge in the relevant sector and ensure its resolution through the introduction of a concrete innovation compared to existing solutions.

The proposed innovative ideas must align with at least one of the specialization areas and development trajectories defined by the Region’s S4 Strategy: (more information: https://www.regione.fvg.it/rafvg/cms/RAFVG/fondi-europei-fvg-internazionale/S4_FVG/FOGLIA13/);

The “collaboration” requirement

To be eligible—and therefore fundable—the project must involve collaboration between multiple entities in at least one of the following ways:

Collaboration between independent companies (up to a maximum of 5), with at least one being an SME; no single entity may bear more than 70% of the project’s expenses.

Collaboration with research institutions, through a contract equal to at least 10% of the project’s total cost;

Collaboration with independent external parties, through consulting services amounting to at least 20% of the project’s total cost.

New in 2025: it is now possible to combine consulting services from external parties and research institutions.

Eligible expenses

Only costs directly related to the submitted Research & Development project are eligible for reporting. The expenses that can be accounted for include:

– Personnel (according to standard rates);

– New tools and equipment, proportionate to their use in the project;

– Technical and scientific consulting services, from research institutions or qualified external parties;

– Services supporting Research & Development (e.g., testing, cloud, technical trials);

– Specialized software, licenses, patents, certifiable know-how;

– Prototyping, materials, and components;

– Consumables;

– Overheads (as regulated by the call guidelines).

New in 2025: expenses for patenting and registering innovations.

Grant amount

The maximum grant available to each participating company is €750,000.

The grant intensity will follow the percentages shown in the table below:
